Infections, such as meningitis, encephalitis, polio, and epidural abscess. Structural disorders, such as brain or spinal cord injury, Bell's palsy, cervical spondylosis, carpal tunnel syndrome, brain or spinal cord tumors, peripheral neuropathy, and Guillain-Barré syndrome. Spinal cord injury causes inflammation which can affect the whole nervous system – this includes the brain, and the brain can be very sensitive to inflammation and pressure. The brain and spinal cord are surrounded by a clear fluid called cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). It supports and protects the brain and the spinal cord. Ventricles are spaces inside the brain filled with CSF. They connect with the space in the centre of the spinal cord and the brain membranes.
