An embolectomy is a procedure that is used to remove an embolus from an artery or vein. An embolus is a fragment of a blood clot that has broken free. It has the potential to travel through your bloodstream and become lodged in another location. This is known as an embolism. An embolism can prevent blood flow to the affected area. A vein embolus can travel to your lungs. This is referred to as a pulmonary embolism or PE. An embolus in your artery has the potential to travel to your brain. This can result in a stroke. An embolus in your leg's femoral artery can cause tissue death. An embolus in your abdomen's artery can cause pain and vomiting. When medications or procedures are ineffective, an embolectomy is performed. Your surgeon will instruct you on how to prepare. He or she may instruct you to refrain from eating or drinking anything after midnight on the day of surgery. Make arrangements for someone to drive you home after you are discharged. Inform your surgeon of any allergies you may have, including those to anesthesia, contrast liquid, or medications. During surgery, contrast liquid may be used to help your surgeon see the blood vessel and embolus more clearly. Inform your surgeon about all medications you are currently taking. He or she will tell you if and when you should stop taking any medications before surgery. He or she will advise you on which medications to take or avoid on the day of surgery.
