An imaging examination called a stress echocardiography uses a stress test—a stimulation that creates a demanding environment inside the heart—to assess how the heart is working. The doctor can identify any changes or anomalies that may have been occurring by comparing pictures of the heart taken before and after it was stimulated using ultrasound waves. A stress echocardiography particularly tracks the heart's viability and functional capacity as well as the distribution of blood flow into the organ. Typically, the test is performed to identify coronary artery disease. Depending on the stressful stimuli, there are two different types of stress echocardiography procedures; nevertheless, the doctor should choose the approach that is best for the patient. Patients are required to walk into a treadmill with varied speeds, often rising in three-minute intervals, for an exercise stress echocardiography. When the patient becomes fatigued or reaches the desired activity level, the exercise is stopped. Contrarily, a pharmacological stress echocardiography uses the drug dubotamine to create a stressful environment for the heart in the form of shortness of breath or chest discomfort. After taking medication, patients will also have rapid, hammering heartbeats.
